Guys, I totally agree!! I've been a member of Family Business Australia since 2005 and personnally, beyond the useful networking that FBA provide with us, meeting people throughout events and sharing with them same experiences, same family issues made me realized how family business is hard but so fantastic.

Samantha & Ben,

I'd like to react on your post. I've been working in my dad's business for a two years now, we haven't heard of FBA before, thanks guys for writing about them. I reviewed their website and we've decided to join because we think it will be very helpful to share experiences with other family businesses, we have nothing to lose and we are sure it'll benefit us a lot :)
thankss!

My family has been running its own business for a couple of years and is also a member of FBA. Because the beginning wasn't as smooth as we expected, we decided to seek some professional advice. FBA provided us with a great support and education programs that helped us to get on a right track. They helped us to find out where we were doing mistakes and advised us on how to reach the success by changing our business strategy. Moreover, through FBA we get a chance to share experiences and advices with family businesses all over Australia!
Thanks to the FBA's programs, our family business has been enjoying prosperity and growth.
so if you seek an advice on how to run your family business successfully, I strongly recommend you to become a member of FBA.

Family business has never been easy, but when you know how to handle the issues, working in a family company is fantastic. I started working in the family business after I completed my university education and I have been working there ever since. For a while I felt it was hard to improve our business and get through new ideas. After a while we knew something had to change and we decided to try out some of the events and the conferences that FBA organized. It made us rethink our business strategy and it embraced the entire spectrum of a family way of doing business. I made contacts with other families that were in the same situation and will recommend to every family business who wants to get their business onto a higher level or solving internal problems to get more information from the FBA website. www.fambiz.org.au

Be careful when you "put your foot down" you maybe crushing a hidden plan that he has for his family. Remember he is an important to your family, remind him of that and you are in charge of admin schedule some time off with him. Express that every week you need him to have down time with his family and with you as a husband. Growing a business from the floor up is very difficult and needs a lot of attention, your marriage is more than just a wife, children, and a husband. Think carefully and chose your words wisely and plan to be 100% supportive of him. This is difficult for him as well, being away from his family is difficult for both parties.

Gaining experience, once again you are in an admin role you know more than you think you do. To test yourself before you get out in the field set up a meeting with your husband do business in the business hours, show him that you have what it takes to be his "help mate" in more than one way.

Now this is very important. When you are with your husband in a business, smile at him like he is the greatest love in yourlife, your admiration and kindness will go very far and will clear up lots of "things" that he has been missing. And he will come around...soon. Let him know that you are there for him no matter what, where and when. Be creative, be fun, be fair.
Be well and Be happy.

First, have a talk with your husband, and tell him how you feel. See what his reaction is - and see if he offers any suggestions for you.

Have yourself a PLAN B .. meaning ... if he does not offer any suggestions or remedies ... then you have your own solutions which would work for you. Present these ideas to him. Tell him it is what YOU want to do.

Tell him it is important to you that you gain experience .. and you want it to happen for you.

Just lay it ALL out on the table. Have your solutions ready.
References :
put your foot down and tell him you want more time with him and you would like him to discuss stratigies with you also... i'm sure if he knows that it concerns you that much he will be quite happy to involve you in everything.. he has probably been so caught up in the business he has forgotten about how much time he needs to spend with you...SB
