Am I Boring If I want to Major in Business?

I’m now finishing my freshman year in college. I’m turning 21 (I took a break in between high school and college). With the life experience that I’ve acquired, I feel that earning my BBA would be best for me.

But family and friends keep on urging me not to. My choir teacher as well as my best friend (an english major) says majoring is "vanilla" and that I should find something with "more flavor". My grandparents are pressuring me into a more academic field so I can earn a PhD.

However, there are several reasons why I’m favoring a BBA:

I want to travel. I will start taking chinese next year so I can look appealing to international markets. Overall I feel that business will help me with traveling. I know it’s not always fun and games; Trips are very serious. But it’s traveling none-the-less

I like to communicate with people. Preferably one-on-one or in small groups. I am very much not a "big crowd" person. however I don’t mind speaking in front of people. I sang in choir for 8 years often doing solos in front of hundreds of people. So speaking isn’t a negative.

Characteristically, I’m very organized. I thrive with lists, outlines and schedule. Without organization, my success is minimal at best.

I like to lead. Though I might not be a social butterfly, I love leadership roles. I don’t know how to explain it. I just enjoy leadership

I do understand that these are good qualities. But should I apply them to something more interesting? Or is there nothing wrong with business? It just seems that with either decision, someone in my life will disaprove.

Any suggestions?

The question you need to ask yourself is what it is YOU want to do, and not worry about the approval of others. If you want to go into business, than I say do it! You’re talking about what you could possibly be doing for a career, and you certainly want to choose something that you want to do. Do you really want to go into something because other people want you to?

I’m currently a sophomore at a community college and I have a duel major in international business and political science. I have decided to do an additional year in order to pick up associates degrees in pre-law and economics, which, to a lot of people, sounds as much fun as watching a slug crawl across the yard. A lot of my friends and family are shocked with my choice, because I originally started out as a Theatre/Psychology major with a minor in art and philosophy. No one understands why I chose to go into something so…so…well, boring.

Honestly though, I don’t find any of it a bit boring. I think that it offers a world of opportunity for many things, all of them very interesting.

My advice is that you do what you want to do, because it’s your life, your career, your future. Don’t hinge those on the opinions of everyone else, or else you could wake up one day, years from now, and regret not pursuing what you truly wanted to.

The key thing to remember about a prospective career is that it is meant to be yours. Not your parents, not your friends, not your grandparents, not your teachers. When it comes down to it, it really is nothing to do with them.

If you want to placate them, try to get yourself some work experience first, show them that you are taking their opinions into consideration. That way, you can tell them that you did not go into business training blind or because of a lack of anything else to do. You did it because you wanted to and you checked that it was right for you with work experience.

There is certainly nothing wrong with business and to those who love the industry it is not boring. That is just a rather irritating stereotype.
